Pastures should be sampled to a depth of 4 inches (this will be the depth of the broadcast fertilizer’s influence).

Soils disturbed by tillage should be sampled to a depth of 6¾ inches or to the depth of the soil disturbance, whichever is deeper.

When you send the samples to the lab, include a complete history of each field on which the lab can base its recommendations, including previous crops, current crop (or predominant pasture species), date of planting if it is not an established pasture, lime applications (list brand names used over the past three years), which fertilizers you have available, and which fertilizers you have access to.
